Adding to the adventure of exploring and experiencing this beautiful region, are numerous places of Drakensberg entertainment. Country pubs, a traditional brewery and a casino, music festivals and Zulu cultural experiences, battlefield tours and re-enactments, shopping opportunities and restaurants.
In Ladysmith you might even encounter a ghost from the days of the Anglo-Boer War.
A special blend of entertainment is promised as you get close to the high peaks of the Drakensberg. Apart from adventure based activities, like mountain climbing, hiking, trout fishing and horse-riding, the Berg resorts offer great food, superb accommodation and fun for the whole family. In addition to sorting facilities, there is the opportunity to enjoy a bird's eye view of the jagged peaks from a helicopter or assess the greatest art gallery we know, the San paintings. Or you can choose to simply watch the clouds waft across the high mountain peaks.
The Battlefields experience has its own a unique form of entertainment. A battlefield tour in the hands of a great raconteur is wonderfully informative and entertaining. Dramatic descriptions of soldiers and events, bravery and suffering, told by a spellbinding story teller, is an emotional and never forgotten experience.
Or arrange to witness the re-enactment of a famous battle; smoking guns, uniforms and traditional clothing orders and counter-orders, advances and retreats. All Oscar winning performances by Zulu, British and Boer.
For the music lover, there are the weekly performances by the internationally famous song birds of the mountains, the Drakensberg Boys Choir in the Champagne Valley, the Maria Ratschitz annual music festival near Dundee and the brass bands and swirling bagpipes of the annual Newcastle Tattoo.
The modern Zulu experience is found, in the form of arts and craft villages or a visit to a township family and a shebeen.
And to walk around the historic towns to view the remarkable architecture is richly rewarding.
For the brave and energetic, there is river rafting, 4x4 trails, tubing, horse riding, gliding, helicopter flips, hiking, mountaineering, abseiling, mountain biking trails, Ilama trekking - and so much more.
