Mkhuze Game Reserve KwaZulu Natal South Africa

The Mkhuze Game reserve in KwaZulu Natal South Africa lies away from the big tourist routes and the number of visitors to it are limited. In the wide plains, the junction of the moderate and tropical climate zones creates a habitat for an extraordinary variety of plants and animals.

Mkhuzi Game Reserve is famous for it bird life With its more than 420 bird species, Mkuzi Game Reserve is a first stop for bird watching. The bigger animals are also well represented here. Visitors can sit in the cool shade of the roofed observation stands at the waterholes and watch the comings and goings for hours on end.

Lately the Mkhuze Game Reserve has come under pressure from the surrounding Zulu communities. The farmers don't understand why there is sufficient grazing ground in the park, while their own cattle can hardly find enough food in the overgrazed plains of the former homelands. The park authority has found a compromise: Part of the reserve is now accessible to the Zulu communities, and in return their settlements are - for an entrance fee - open to visitors who want to see Zulu village life at close range.
